All along the Eastern seaboard, millions of people have just gone through the worst storm in history. Hurricane Sandy, dubbed Frankenstorm, with terrifying factors making it 2000 miles long and 1000 miles wide. Disaster struck just before Halloween......again, last year, it was a freak snowstorm of 8 inches. It makes you wonder is Halloween jinxed here in NYC?
This Halloween people are salvaging what's left of their belongings, floating in feet of water in their homes, being rescued by the National Guard and counting their blessings that they're alive. Others are not so lucky, 20 people have lost their lives here in NYC.
This Halloween, the spirit isn't there. I never really loved Halloween, I didn't grow up with it so, although we've been here 7 years, I still find it a strange night.
This Halloween, my son, Grand Master D, is about to turn 12 and decided he didn't want to dress up and Miss Gremlin (8) has several ideas but she's at that age where she's too embarrassed to be seen. So the interest isn't really there. They don't want to miss out on the candy of course, but going door to door begging for it doesn't seem right.
There's more important things going on. I want to take them to volunteer somewhere. I probably won't but I want to :) To give some thing up, for a needy child, whose home is gone. It's an opportunity to teach them to give and be compassionate.
For all these reasons, I spoke with them last night during the storm, explaining how I felt. I may have had a hidden agenda.
I promised candy, and I'll deliver it, but we won't be dressing up and we won't be trick or treating.
People have lost everything, this year Halloween just doesn't matter.
